Bankwinstgevendheid en bankrisico bij lage rente

De huidige omgeving van uitzonderlijk lage rente heeft een negatieve invloed op de winstgevendheid
van banken. Ook wordt de rentemarge aangetast doordat banken minder winst behalen uit de traditionele
intermediaire activiteiten van spaargeld aantrekken en geld uitlenen. Desalniettemin slagen
(Amerikaanse) banken er in hun winst vrijwel op peil te houden, onder meer door middel van het verlagen
van hun kredietvoorzieningen voor (niet-presterende) leningen. De banken lijken niet geneigd
te zijn de lagere netto rente-inkomsten te compenseren door meer risico te nemen.
